Tribe: Phkaloum
Translation: “Lotus on the Lake”
Roots: ‘Phka’- from Phka chhouk which is Khmer for lotus flower (with Phka meaning lotus). The lotus is very symbolic in Cambodian culture and Buddhism, and is often used as an offering during religious ceremonies. Also, the lotus symbolizes birth and rebirth through the fact that the petals open when the sun comes out and closes when the sun sets. This flower serves as a symbol if fertility, creation, and purity; a perfect representation of the female tribe. The long stem symbolizes our connection to our origins, while the flower represents the enlightenment to which we aspire. ‘Loum’- from Yak Loum which is a lake in northeastern Cambodia. This lake is tremendously deep, clean, clear, and almost entirely round. As represented by these characteristics of Yak Loum, we feel that the female tribe understands the necessity of trust, transparency, and character needed to succeed in this game. Yak Loum is also very rich with culture as it is believed that the surrounding forest is a spirit forest with mythical creatures, and that according to legend only those who are pure and innocent are capable of swimming in it. When considering the feminine mystique, qualities such as purity and innocence often come to mind.
Tribal description: Together, Phkaloum, “lotus on the lake” could be interpreted as the balance between fertility and creation in a sea of innocence and clarity. This symbolism is significant in many religious texts and is also translated to the flag created for the female tribe. The image of Yak Loum and the lotus flower are transposed in the background of the flag. Also included in the flag is the image of the Mekong dolphin. This creature is included because of its power in the game is not to be ignored and as a way to represent the fact that our game is being played near the Tonle Sap. The images of the female tribe members are placed around Yak Loum. Considering the legend of this lake, we believe this tribe is worthy of being near the shores of such a mystical place. We accept the challenge they present to us and bring this flag to them.
